Floor grinding

We grind off high spots, lumps and rough patches so the floor is flatter.

Includes

  • High spots
  • Protrusions
  • Surface unevenness
  • Concrete, timber, particleboard and plywood
A floor grinder with its dust extraction hose and lead in a bare room, the slab marked with fine cracks.

Grinding takes off high spots, protrusions and surface unevenness, so the next floor goes down on a flatter base.

On concrete, we grind. On timber, particleboard and plywood subfloors, we sand the high joints, raised edges and cupped boards flat. It's the same job on a different base.

The floor is assessed first

Grinding takes off the raised material where the check shows the surface needs it.

  • A straight edge across a hallway slab rocks on a raised crest, with gaps under both ends.

    High spots

Raised areas and trowel ridges sitting above the rest of the floor.

  • A straight edge resting on a hard lump on a bare slab.

    Protrusions

Lumps of material stuck to or standing out of the surface.

  • A straight edge across a slab touches in a few places, with light showing through the gaps beneath it.

    Surface unevenness

A wavy surface with no single high point.

The base underneath

The same service on two kinds of base.

  • A planetary floor grinder connected to a red dust extractor on a bare slab, with a paler ground strip behind it.

    Concrete

High spots, protrusions and unevenness ground back.

  • A paler sanded band across a stained sheet subfloor in a bedroom, a straight edge lying on it and a walk-behind floor sander by the wall.

    Timber, particleboard and plywood

High joints, raised edges and cupped boards sanded flat, ready for the new floor.

Questions

Do you grind timber subfloors too?

Yes. On timber, particleboard and plywood subfloors we sand the high spots, joints and edges flat, ready for the new floor.

Will the floor need anything else after grinding?

Sometimes. If there are low spots as well, they get filled. We'll tell you once we've checked the floor.

Tell us about your floor and we'll get back to you.
